Questions
Who do you think the bad guy in the movie
is representing? Give 3or 4 things they have
in common.
Firstly, Gary Winston was the worst guy in the movie cause he was the boss in the company and he done the every bad things including murder for getting the data. Secondly, Lisa, whose beauty cheated others, especially Milo, was the only person that Milo trusted and also the bad guy because she defect the justice side. Moreover, the workers, also killers and the technicians who work for Gary were the bad people too.
There are some similarities among the bad guys. To begin with, they were all money-oriented. That was the money driven them to break the law. Gary wanted the SYNAPSE be successful so that he could earn a big profit. Of course, the people worked for him would get a lot of money too. Then, they were power-oriented. They wanted monopoly. Furthermore, they were flouting the law. Though they knew murder was illegal, they did, ignore the law and respect to life just for stealing.
What is Open Source? How is it different
from commercial software, from freeware?
Open source, refers to a term of free software. An open-source application program, is permitted to the public that obtaining the application program of the source code under a copyright license and also accessing to modify the original program code.
Commercial software, is a computer software which is exchanged as a commodity, to be more exact, it is being developed by a business which aims to make money from the use of the software. The commercial entity often provides support, training, updates and other similar services needed by customers to efficiently use that software. The source code of the software may be made available to certain users of the software through special licensing or other agreements。
Difference between open source and
commercial software:
firstly, the development model. Open source is usually developed by several technicians, while, commercial software is developed by the internal business technicians and copyright belongs to the company. Secondly, the business models. Commercial software is charged while open source is free. Third, the licensing models. These two software are both need to obey agreements that about the intellectual property rights. What is the difference is that they obey different agreements. For instance, open source obey GPL. Finally, the cost, safety and flexible is different between open source and commercial software.
Freeware is the software product that free of charge to users. Software developers promote the freeware in order to enhance the impact of the company. It is commonly used for packages which permit redistribution but not modification (and their source code is not available).
What is the open source
business model (how ca
n open source developers
make money)?
During the period of development, open source is not only free open-source software, but also a new business model. Compared with the commercial software, open source adopt different form to reduce cost of scales and marketing and disseminate widely such as open source, free of charge and distribution. There are seven common business models. 1: a variety of product lines. For example, MYSQL is provided open source version and professional version to individuals and businesses and mandates of different ways. Free open source version is facilitated to promote while professional version is sold to make profit. 2: technical service. For instance, JBoss provided free application server and make profit by providing technical documentation, training, support the development of secondary. 3: application services provide (ASP). It provides real-time chat services. 4: software and hardware integration. Like IBM HP servers, through bundled free Linux operating system to sale hardware servers. 5: accessories. 6: brand strategy and service-oriented. 7: market strategy.
Do you think open source can be a threat to
commercial software or do you think it will
be stolen from as shown in the movie?
Yes, I think open source will be a threat to commercial software because of its lower cost, lower price and better service. The code is open which make users easier to understand and solve the problems of software without worrying about the licence.
Also, I think open source will be stolen from as shown in the movie. People like Gray, always want to steal the new technique from someone else. Actually, someone steal the open source, modify something and announce that this is developed by himself. This situation is normal, and what technicians should do is creating continually and making it more perfect which devoting to IT industry. Fortunately, people like Milo who think human knowledge belongs to world will unveil truth.
